Olivia Wilde, Anthony Mackie, Diane Keaton, John Goodman and more gather for 'Love the Coopers' trailer

In what appears to be in the same tradition as cinematic Lifetime efforts like The Family Stone, Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Olivia Wilde, Anthony Mackie, Ed Helms, Marisa Tomei and Amanda Seyfried are just a handful of stars lending their talents to the holiday-themed family comedy Love the Coopers, which just had its first trailer debut at the tail-end of summer.

Exclusively released by Yahoo, the newest film from director Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) and writer Steven Rogers (P.S. I Love You) by no means looks unpleasant. Like the yuletide days of December, spirits are high and everything is sweetly packaged together, but there's nothing particularly fresh or authentic about what's on display here. With its plain-lighting and big-name players mucking it up for the camera, its less unsavory as much as it is a little too sugarcoated for its own good.

But the cast, also including Alex Borstein, Jake Lacy (Obvious Child), Alan Arkin, June Squibb, Jon Tenney and the narration of Steve Martin, appears to be enjoying themselves, and there's a slight-but-unquestionably festive atmosphere is easier to agree with during the dog days of summer. Much like spending time back with your family, though, a lot of the pleasantries feel forced and there's not a lot of joy to be had in its routine approach.

Of course, the main attraction here isn't the story but the pretty stars joined together like a display of Christmas lights around the tree, much like Gary Marshall's fairly recent ensemble pieces like Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve, and that will probably treat some audience members well enough for the Lionsgate/CBS Film release. It's certainly not demanding much, and it's hard to get mad at something so slight-by-design. But is it a little too much to ask for something a little less than traditional for the holidays?

Nevertheless, Love the Coopers, previously titled Tis the Season and Let It Snow, looks like a Hallmark card ready to be delivered on November 13. And, though it may not be the gift that keeps on giving, it may just bring enough good tidings.
