'Straight Outta Compton' debuts at No. 1 with $56.1 million

Straight Outta Compton topped the box office this weekend, debuting at number one with $56.1 million.

The film — which stars O'Shea Jackson, Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren and Neil Brown, Jr. as DJ Yella — chronicles the rise and fall of hip-hop group N.W.A.

The $56.1 million opening nearly doubled the film's production budget of $29 million, according to CNN. The film was expected to debut with only $25 million.

The N.W.A biopic beat out Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, which took the number two spot in this weekend's box office. Man From U.N.C.L.E. landed at number three, Fantastic Four took the fourth spot and The Gift sat at number five, according to Rentrak.

Straight Outta Compton now has the record for the biggest August opening ever for an R-rated film. American Pie 2 previously held the record in 2001 with a $45.1 million opening, according to Variety.

Compton also had the best opening ever for a music biographical film, surpassing Eminem's 8 Mile ($51.2 million, 2002) and the Johnny Cash documentary-drama Walk the Line ($22.3 million, 2005).

Straight Outta Compton currently has a score of 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Check out our review of the film here.
