'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' extended edition gets R rating

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is heading back to theaters with an all new extended edition, and this time the MPAA has given the movie an R rating.

According to Ropes of Silicon, the MPAA has rated the extended edition of The Battle of the Five Armies R for "some violence." When it initially hit theaters last year, the theatrical cut of the Peter Jackson film was rated PG-13 for "extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images."

No word yet on what the extra scenes will be or if Warner Bros. will appeal the MPAA's decision, but if not, this will be the first version of any of the movies in the Lord of the Rings franchise to not be rated PG-13.

As we previously reported, the extended editions of the Hobbit movies hit theaters this October in a special three night event. While the longer cuts of the first two movies are available on DVD and blu-ray, this will be the first time fans get a look at the new scenes of The Battle of the Five Armies. The extended edition of that movie is expected to be about a half hour longer.

The event is slated to begin on Monday, October 5th in select theaters.
