After a 13 year hiatus, Vin Diesel will officially be returning as Xander Cage very soon.
Diesel posted an update about xXx 3 on his Instagram page, writing that "The time to return has come. Filming starts December in the Philippines."
In 2002's xXx, Diesel plays an extreme sports athlete who's recruited by the government. It grossed a pretty solid $277 million at the box office, but Diesel didn't return for the sequel, xXx: State of the Union. Instead, Ice Cube took over the lead role, and the sequel was a box office bomb and was absolutely destroyed by critics.
Now that Diesel has been in huge hits like Guardians of the Galaxy and the Fast and the Furious movies, he has much more freedom to explore whatever projects he wants, as was clear when he managed to get a new Riddick movie into production. xXx is kind of a weird film for Diesel to want to do a followup to, considering the most recent installment was a disaster and the original wasn't even that well received, but presumably he has some new idea for the character that he thinks will be fun to explore in a third film.
Diesel has previously talked about this sequel, which is rumored to be titled xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage, but this Instagram post was our first sign that it wouldn't just be stuck in development hell. Assuming filming does begin in December, we can probably expect a release date of late 2016 or early 2017.
