Authorities in Arizona have arrested three suspects who they have called “copycats” in the case of the shootings on Interstate 10 in metro Phoenix.
Reuters noted that police said three 18-year-olds admitted to launching rocks off a slingshot at motorists in the same area where the recent shootings have occurred. However, they do not believe the teens are responsible for the shootings in which bullets and other projectile were shot at vehicles in the area.
"This probably is a copycat but that's still serious and I'm sure there will be copycats out there," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
The teens were charged on Saturday with criminal damage and conspiracy. As of Sunday, they remained in custody.
"Don't kid yourself. What the kids were doing last night was absolutely lethal," said Colonel Frank Milstead of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. "None of us should have to drive the highways and roadways and worry about people just randomly shooting items at our vehicles."
As we previously reported, drivers who take the freeway have been plagued by almost a dozen shootings that have taken place since Aug. 29. No one has been killed, but a 13-year-old girl was injured by shattered glass when the windshield of the vehicle she was in was shot at.
Police have questioned people in connection with the highway shootings but at this time do not have the person responsible in custody.
