The idea of a new Mary Poppins might sound supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, but if it does happen, Disney might be looking to bring in another member of the Into The Woods team for the project: Emily Blunt.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Disney, producers John DeLuca and Marc Blatt and director Rob Marshall are considering making a new Mary Poppins film that would be based on other P.L. Travers stories. It wouldn't be billed as a sequel to the 1964 classic with Julie Andrews, but also wouldn’t be considered a reboot.
Hairspray team Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman were picked to write the songs and score, while Life of Pi’s David Magee will write the script.
While Disney still hasn’t even confirmed this project, Den Of Geek claims that Blunt is on Disney’s “radar.” If she wants to make it, she’d likely get the job, but the site notes that she probably hasn’t even been contacted.
Considering that Blunt gave a Golden Globe-nominated performance in Into The Woods, why wouldn’t the studio be interested in casting her? Plus, she’s become one of the top stars in the business, playing alongside Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow and starring in the upcoming Sicario. She’s also the star of the upcoming adaptation of the popular novel The Girl On The Train. Oh, and she’s British, just like the character of Mary Poppins.
Meanwhile, BoyleSports in Ireland thinks they know who will play Mary Poppins. According to Entertainment Weekly, Anne Hathaway is their favorite with 6/4 odds. Blunt’s odds are 5/2.
