Although the co-hosts of ABC’s The View have tried to apologize for making fun of Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson’s monologue about being a nurse during last weekend’s Miss America pageant, the show has continued to lose advertisers.
This controversy started on Monday, following the pageant on Sunday. View co-hosts Michelle Collins and Joy Behar found it funny that Johnson decided to talk about being a nurse and her relationship with an Alzheimer’s patient. Collins’ and Behar’s comments sparked outrage among viewers and led to the #NursesUnite hashtag.
The comments also didn’t sit well with advertisers, even after Collins apologized on Tuesday. First, Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best withdrew their advertising dollars. TMZ reported on Friday that McCormick, Party City and Snuggle are joining them.
“Like you, we also value and admire nurses, so we have paused advertising on the daytime television show,” a representative for McCormick told a Facebook user.
Meanwhile, Miss America CEO Sam Haskell III told People that they have accepted The View co-hosts apologies.
“Kelley used the talent portion of the Miss America competition to share her passion about a special story experienced through her job,” Haskell said. "I am glad that Michelle and Joy apologized.”
The controversy surrounding the nurses comments dominated The View all week and on Friday, they even brought on guests to talk about how important nurses are, notes Entertainment Weekly.
Collins said on Friday that she didn’t “understand” the challenges that nurses face on a daily basis. “I’ll be honest I think the comments made Monday kind of played into that, and I’m sorry about that. Every day you guys deal with life and death situations,” she said.
Johnson didn’t end up winning the pageant, but she has easily received the most attention thanks to her monologue. She was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week to explain her decision to talk about a job that’s very important to her.
