Despite being born three months early and weighing only 1 pound, a Utah couple’s baby is expected to survive. What makes the baby’s survival even more miraculous is that he was born on a cruise ship in the Caribbean.
Chase and Emily Morgan of Ogden, Utah were on a seven-day cruise around the Caribbean with their 3-year-old daughter Chloe. The couple told KSL that the Emily’s due date wasn’t until December, so doctors gave her the OK to take the trip in late August. However, on the second night of the trip, Emily began feeling labor pains. The ship’s doctor told her not to push because they weren’t reaching a port for another 14 hours.
Thirty minutes later, the baby was born and the ship’s staff first told her that she had miscarried. But there was a miracle twist.
“About 45 minutes after I had delivered, the two doctors came back in and said the baby was still alive, however, they didn't expect him to live very long,” Emily told KSL.
Emily and the medical staff kept the baby warm. The captain called Emily and was stunned to hear the baby crying in the room with her.
They managed to get to San Juan, Puerto Rico two hours early and doctors say that these two hours saved baby Haiden Morgan’s life. The Associated Press reports that two ambulances met them at the port and they were transferred to a Miami children’s hospital a few days later.
Although Haiden is making progress, he will probably stay hospitalized until Dec. 19, when he was expected to be born. The Morgans will stay in Miami until Haiden is strong enough to be transferred to a Utah hospital.
The Morgans started a GoFundMe page to help them pay for expenses. In just two days, they have received over 630 donations and raised $29,090.
