The Oakland Athletics have very little to play for in the last weeks of the 2015 MLB season, but they have suddenly given fans a reason to be excited. They might get to see former ace Barry Zito take one last shot at playing in the big leagues.
Seemingly out of the blue today, the A’s tweeted that they have called up Zito, 37, from their minor league farm team in Nashville. They also recalled pitcher Cody Martin and put Jesse Chavez on the 60-day disabled list.
As Fox Sports notes, the A’s had said before that they had no plans to call up Zito, who had spent the entire 2015 season in Nashville. However, the team has faced mounting injuries with their pitchers. Plus, the team is almost eliminated from the playoffs, so they might as well give Zito a shot.
The hope among A’s fans is that Zito will get a chance to face off against former A’s teammate Tim Hudson. The 40-year-old Hudson is now with the San Francisco Giants and his next start could come at the Coliseum, notes the SF Chronicle.
However, the Chronicle’s Susan Slusser tweeted that the A’s aren’t likely to use Zito as a starter.
Zito was drafted by the A’s in 1999 and won the 2002 AL Cy Young award. He pitched for the Giants from 2007 through 2013 and was a part of the 2012 team that won the World Series. He has a 165-143 record.
