Alison Brie to star in Julian Fellowes’ ‘Doctor Thorne’ with Tom Hollander

The Weinstein Company has joined Doctor Thorne, Julian Fellowes’ adaptation of Anthony Trollope's 19th Century novel. The ITV mini-series will feature Tom Hollander in the title role, along with Alison Brie, Rebecca Front and Ian McShane.

Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean, A Poet In New York) plays Dr. Thomas Thorne, who lives with his rich young niece Mary, played by newcomer Stefanie Martini. Frank Gresham, played by another newcomer, Harry Richardson, falls in love with Mary, which is bad news for his family. Frank’s family wants him to marry a rich heiress, so they find Miss Martha Dunstable (Brie) and think she’s a better potential wife.

Other members of the ensemble cast include Richard McCabe, Phoebe Nicholls, Gwyneth Keyworth, Kate O’Flynn and Edward Franklin.

Nail McCormick is directing from a script be Fellowes, who is best known as the creator of Downton Abbey. Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein are among the executive producers. The drama will run three parts and starts filming this month.

Doctor Thorne is a wonderful example of Trollope's gift for understanding the tangles we humans get into,” Fellowes said in a statement. “He is sharply observant, critical and merciful in equal measure and, above all, highly entertaining. With the cast we have assembled, I am confident we can bring all of these qualities to the screen.”

This is another big part for Brie, who is coming off the end of both Community and Mad Men. She’s also hoping to break into movies, starring in Sleeping With Other People with Jason Sudeikis. The film began its limited release last weekend.
