Although we know Benicio Del Toro will be appearing in Star Wars: Episode VIII, the actor now says that the character he's playing isn't who we think.
It had previously been reported that Del Toro's character would be the villain of the movie, but in a new interview, the actor is saying that isn't exactly the case.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Del Toro said of his character, “I don't know if he's a villain. People are saying that, but it's like they read a different script than I read.”
This contradicts not only previous reports, but previous Del Toro quotes. As pointed out by Slashfilm, the actor said earlier this month that he's the villain of the movie. He noted at the time, "Ehhh, the thing is, they don’t let me talk too much about it. I’m like the villain. But we’ll see.”
So is Del Toro really not the villain and he misspoke in the previous interview? Or could it be that him being a bad character is meant to be a surprise, and so now he's trying to walk back his comments? We probably won't find out for a while, as Star Wars: Episode VIII doesn't hit theaters until 2017. Production on the movie is rumored to begin in early 2016.
