Box office: ‘Maze Runner’ outruns Johnny Depp’s ‘Black Mass,’ ‘Everest’ stuns in IMAX

The box office came back to life this weekend thanks to 20th Century Fox’s Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Johnny Depp’s career also came back to life with Warner Bros.’ Black Mass. But the real shock came from IMAX screens as Universal scored another hit with Everest.

Maze Runner 2 (reviewed here) came in first place with $30.3 million. The film also scorched the overseas box office with $73.6 million, so its worldwide total is at $108.3 million.

The new film’s opening was shockingly similar to its predecessor’s. On the same weekend a year ago, The Maze Runner opened to $32.5 million, on its way to scoring $340.7 million worldwide. There’s one more film in the trilogy, which is based on Philip Straub’s YA novels.

Black Mass (reviewed here) opened to $23.36 million. As Box Office Mojo notes, that’s similar to The Town, which opened to $23.8 million in 2010, but less than The Departed’s $26.8 million 2006 debut. Of course, it’s much better than Depp’s last movie, Mortdecai, which made $7.7 million during its entire run earlier this year.

M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit (reviewed here) held on well in its second week with $11.3 million. Last week’s No. 1, The Perfect Guy, fell to fourth with $9.7 million.

But the big story of the weekend has to be the success of Everest in the No. 5 slot. The film only played in 545 IMAX 3D theaters and still made $7.5 million. It will be playing in more theaters this upcoming weekend.

Sicario, which is being released by Lionsgate, made a stunning $390,000 from just six locations. The Emily Blunt thriller opens wide on Oct. 2.
