While The Visit earned filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan his best reviews in years, the low-budget horror film couldn't quite bring him back to box office glory. In a very tight race, the film lost to Sony’s thriller The Perfect Guy.
There was just over $1 million separating the two films. The Perfect Guy, which stars Sanaa Lathan and Michael Ealy, opened to $26.7 million, while The Visit earned $25.7 million.
The Perfect Guy cost just $12 million to make and is the latest successful domestic thriller with a predominately African American cast. Films like No Good Deed and Obsessed have also succeeded in September. And they have been big hits with audiences. Box Office Mojo notes that it earned an A- CinemaScore grade.
The Visit was a return to form for Shyamalan, who teamed up with low-budget horror master producer Jason Blum this time around. However, it earned did earn less than After Earth’s $27.5 million opening. But while that bomb cost $130 million to make, The Visit was made for just $5 million.
According to Rentrak data, last week’s winner, War Room came in third with $7.4 million. The faith-based Sony film has grossed $39.2 million domestically so far.
A Walk In The Woods came in fourth with $4.7 million. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation rounded out the Top 5 with $4.1 million.
While Sony’s cheap faith-based film War Room was a hit, the independent 90 Minutes In Heaven failed to gain traction in a limited debut. The film only made $2.2 million from 838 locations.
