Hollywood is currently working on a trio of projects about Billie Jean King and, more specifically, about her famous match with Bobby Riggs. One of them was set to star Emma Stone, but she dropped out and has been replaced by Brie Larson.
Stone was originally supposed to star in Battle of the Sexes for Fox Searchlight, opposite her Crazy Stupid Love co-star Steve Carell, who is still playing Riggs. But Variety has confirmed that Larson is in talks to replace Stone as King.
Battle of the Sexes will be directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine, Ruby Sparks) and written by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire). Danny Boyle and Christian Colson are producing.
The film will center on the famous 1973 tennis match between King and Riggs, a former Wimbledon champion. It is also the subject of an HBO movie that will star Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti and Will Ferrell’s Match Maker. Ferrell hasn’t found his King yet.
Larson will next be seen in Room, which won critical acclaim in Toronto, on Oct. 16. Her other recent credits include Short Term 12, Trainwreck and The Gambler. She’s also attached to Kong: Skull Island.
