Bryan Fuller discusses possibility of 'Hannibal' miniseries or movie

Still reeling from the Hannibal finale last week? You're not alone, but here's some good news: creator Bryan Fuller says there's still a chance the cancelled series could live on in some form.

In an interview with HitFix, Fuller said that producer Martha De Laurentiis is currently looking into funding for a Hannibal feature film.

"The season 4 that we were going to tell is such a restart and reimagining that I still hope in some way that we get to tell a version of that, if not Silence of the Lambs itself, as a miniseries," he said. "I would love to return this cast to the big screen from whence they came, and Hannibal Lecter to the big screen, from whence he came. It seems perfectly symmetrical."

When asked the odds of a proper fourth season, though, Fuller said they're probably less than 50/50, and not in Hannibal's favor. In addition to the movie comment, Fuller also floated the idea of a miniseries on Starz in a few years, the network he'll be working with on American Gods.

Fuller has discussed in other conversations after the finale that the last episode was planned as a potential conclusion if the show was cancelled, but it was also meant to leave things open if they were so lucky as to get another season. Given how perfect of an ending it was, though, should there even be any more?

"But I'm curious to see how folks respond to the finale, and then also if that satisfies them," Fuller said. "If that feels like 'We got a conclusion to our story and it's wrapped up in a bow, and we don't need anymore,' then the audience will dictate. But if the audience is still there for the show and still wants a continuation of that story, I'll continue looking for ways to give it to them."

So for now, it seems far more likely that we'll see a feature film version of the Season 4 arc in a few years rather than a proper season airing on some network or streaming service. Even if a network was interested, one huge setback is everyone finding room in their schedule. Bryan Fuller will now be working on American Gods for Starz, and Mads Mikkelsen has signed on for a role in Star Wars: Rogue One and is being considered for Doctor Strange.
