David Gilmour talks about new solo album ’Rattle That Lock’ in first U.S. television interview

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour released his new LP Rattle That Lock, his first solo album in nine years, on Friday, sitting down with CBS This Morning the next day to open up about the release.

On the coattails of Pink Floyd’s final album The Endless River, the 69-year old guitarist came forward with new solo work on what is his first ever in-depth interview for U.S. television.

When asked about hearing his tracks for the first time on the radio, Gilmour was ecstatic.

“You have this idea that there are millions, literally, of people listening to it at the same time as you and that little strange telepathy of a feeling that you’re sharing something live with all those people,” he said.

Gilmour and his wife Polly Samson worked hand-in-hand on the album, with Samson scribing the lyrics for five of Rattle That Lock’s 10 tracks.

“I walk for miles with [the track] on repeat in my headphones…the more I walk with it and the more I listen to it, things just start emerging,” Samson said. “And the music is so suggestive. I mean, David speaks with the guitar.”

On Rattle That Lock, the dirgeful “A Boat Lies Waiting,” is an homage to Pink Floyd’s late keys player, Richard Wright, who left too soon in September 2008. Wright’s voice is heard in the introduction, paired with the tinkling of piano before Gilmour dives in.

Rolling Stone reports:
“We’ve missed Rick as a friend, as a person, but I think it was at the point that you realized exactly what you’d lost in terms of music, you know, 50 years of reading each other’s musical minds and what came out of that,” Samson said to Gilmour in an aside.

On the funeral of Floyd, Gilmour made it very clear that The Endless River is the end to a long era.
“It’s impossible anyway to go back and do that properly without [Wright]. And there would be no great joy in it,” Gilmour said. “It ran its course in a wonderful way. I don’t miss it.”

Gilmour’s tour is set to begin next year, with two nights each at the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Garden in New York.
