Eddie Redmayne may become the first actor since Tom Hanks in 1994-1995 to win two consecutive Best Actor Oscars back-to-back. The performer already received his first for portraying Stephen Hawking in last year's The Theory of Everything, but he embarks on another timely piece this fall in embodying Lili Elbe, the 1920s Danish artist among the first recipients of sexual reassignment surgery, in Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl, which received its first trailer this morning.
The biopic, also starring Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Ben Whishaw, Amber Heard and Matthias Schoenaerts (Far From the Madding Crowd), makes its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday. However, this preview serves as the public's first look at the potential power contender. Based on the 2000 book by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl has worked its way into development since 2009, with directors Tomas Alfredson, Lasse Hallstrom and Bill Condon hopping in the chair before Hooper (The King's Speech) took over, and stars Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Marion Collitard and Rachel Weisz all set (or at least rumored) at various points for the part of Gerda Wegner before Vikander landed the role.
With celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox, and TV shows such as Orange is the New Black and Transparent, continuing to bring triumphant awareness to the transgender community, however, Elbe's life story probably couldn't have come at a better time to the big screen. And though this trailer does check off a number of Oscar-bait tendencies, there's a swelling sense of compassion and gentleness in this trailer. It's one which suggests Hooper's movie will become more than just an awards-sweeper. The reviews coming in this weekend determine if this is the case, but don't be surprised to see this one take home more than a handful of awards at next year's ceremony.
The Danish Girl comes to theaters in limited release on November 27, before expanding throughout December. Check out the trailer below:
