Elton John spoke to Russian pranksters, not Vladimir Putin

Sir Elton John said this week on Instagram that he spoke with Russian president Vladimir Putin, but the Kremlin quickly said that it never happened. Then, two Russian pranksters took credit for the call.

Last week, John said he wanted a meeting with Putin to discuss gay rights in Russia. On Tuesday, John posted a picture on Instagram, claiming that Putin had the “Tiny Dancer” singer up personally.

“Thank-you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today,” John wrote. “I look to forward to meeting with you face-to-face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia.”

However, the Associated Press reports that Putin’s spokesman told the media that this supposed call never happened. Then, Vladimir "Vovan" Krasnov and Alexei "Lexus" Stolyarov told Russia’s Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that they were the ones who called John on Tuesday, pretending to be Putin and the president’s spokesman.

The television personalities, who have a popular show in Russia and Ukraine, said that audio from their call will be played during their show on Wednesday.

Putin’s spokesman told local media that the pranksters should apologize to John because the singer is “a much respected and loved performer over here.”
