During an interview this weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival, Sicario star Emily Blunt joked that the Republican presidential debate had made her think that getting American citizenship was a bad idea.
Blunt spoke with The Hollywood Reporter while in Toronto to promote her new thriller, but was asked about her thoughts on Donald Trump possibly becoming president of her new home.
“I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, 'This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?’” Blunt joked.
Of course, Fox News didn’t quite think this was a joke, with Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy suggesting that Blunt “just Dixie Chick’d herself. She just alienated half the country that now will think twice about going to one of her movies.” Anna Kooiman also told Blunt to leave Hollywood.
Blunt’s new film is Sicario, in which she plays a young FBI agent who joins an elite task force on drugs. The film, directed by Prisoners’ Denis Villeneuve, hits theaters on Oct. 2.
Blunt is married to The Office star John Krasinski.
