Emmys 2015: 5 things to watch for in Comedy with 'Modern Family,' 'Transparent' and 'Parks & Recreation'

With the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards just six days away now and the ceremony is going to be dominated by outgoing shows. On the drama side, there’s Mad Men and comedy lovers get to see if Parks and Recreation can finally win something big.

But there is also another storyline, which will continue to be a storyline until we finally comprehend the idea of television shows not on television. Streaming shows from Netflix have already started to win Emmys and this year will be a test for Amazon Studios. While Transparent won two Golden Globes, that doesn’t necessarily guarantee Emmy glory (just ask Brooklyn Nine-Nine).

Here’s five things to keep an eye on while watching the Emmys on Fox Sunday in the comedy categories.

Streaming: Transparent vs. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Jill Soloway’s Transparent has earned critical acclaim for its first season, which is only available for Amazon Prime members. But it isn’t the token streaming comedy nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which is available on Netflix, was also nominated in the top category. Considering that the Emmys showered Fey’s previous series, 30 Rock, with some incredible love, it’s hard to count Kimmy Schmidt out. (Although, even as a fan, I don’t think it has a legit chance for its first season.)

Transparent has already won three Emmys during the Creative Arts ceremony, including Guest Actor for Bradley Whitford’s performance. Even if it doesn’t come away with Comedy Series, it sounds like you could bet on Jeffrey Tambor having a shot at Lead Actor.

2. Parks and Recreation Goodbye Party

How many Emmys has Parks and Recreation won? Exactly zero. Amy Poehler was a perennial nominee, but just like Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, she’s never won. This is also just the second time the show has had a shot at Comedy Series. It would be a shame if this hilarious show never gets any Emmys.

3. Modern Family - Exit Stage Left

While Modern Family still has its moments, the show has overstayed its welcome. It has won Comedy Series five years in a row and it’s about time someone else wins it. I beg you Emmy voters, it’s time to get over your infatuation with the series. If you need to give an award to anyone on this show, give one to Ty Burrell.

4. Veep needs even more love

Yes, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won an Emmy for every single season of HBO’s biting political satire, but there are other people on this show. Tony Hale remains the only other actor to receive an award for this show, but Anna Chlumsky deserves her moment after that incredible break-down episode in front of Louis-Dreyfus. If any show should finally unseat Modern Family for Comedy Series, please be VEEP (although I wouldn't mind Louie doing that).

5. Sketch comedy wild cards

Weirdly enough, sketch comedy is represented among the nominees, although both in supporting categories. Keegan-Michael Key of Key & Peele was nominated, although his co-star Jordan Peele wasn’t. (I’m still not sure how you can be a supporting player in a show that has your name in the title.) Kate McKinnon, who might be the only possible reason to still keep an eye on Saturday Night Live, is also up. But if I want Chlumsky to win, then McKinnon is out. Key has a better shot, since the Support Actor category might be wide open if the Emmys don’t want to recognize someone who’s already won.
