The 67th annual Primetime Emmys are now just three days away. While we already looked at the big storylines in the Comedy categories, it’s time to look at what’s going on in the drama world.
The broadcast networks might still have some sway left in the comedy categories, but they’ve nearly lost all respect in the drama categories. Perennial bridesmaid The Good Wife was left out of the Outstanding Drama Series category, meaning that none of the big four are represented there. No lead actor from a broadcast drama was nominated, while two actress from broadcast dramas (Empire’s Taraji P. Henson and How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis) were nominated.
Netflix’s presence is even greater in the drama categories, since new rules mean that Orange is the New Black is now a drama. House of Cards got its annual recognition and Bloodline managed to even earn a few nominations.
Here’s five storylines to keep an eye on while watching the Emmys on Fox Sunday. And be sure to check out my notes on the Comedy categories.
1. Can Game of Thrones finally win something... please?
HBO’s Game of Thrones might be watched by more people than any of the other nominees for Drama Series, but viewers do not decide the Emmys. While it will probably still not win the top prize, it would be nice if the show could finally pick up another acting Emmy. The show’s only major acting Emmy came in 2011 when Peter Dinklage won Supporting Actor.
Dinklage is up again and two actresses have taken slots in the Supporting Actress category. Both Lena Headey (a nominee last year) and Emilia Clarke are up for that award.
2. How will Orange is the New Black do as a Dama?
While the first season of OITNB didn’t exactly clean up the comedy categories in 2014, Uzo Aduba did win for Guest Actress and the show picked up two other Emmys for casting and editing. Now that it’s in the drama categories and has to compete with some real heavyweights, how will it do? Aduba is up again, this time for Supporting Actress and the show is up for Drama Series.
3. Will TV Academy make-up for Empire snubs by giving Taraji P. Henson an Emmy?
Back when the Emmy nominations were announced, many were surprised that Empire, the most-watched new broadcast show of the 2014-2015 season, was mostly shut out in major categories. However, the TV Academy could make up for that by giving Henson the Lead Actress Emmy. Of course, that would mean that Elisabeth Moss would have to lose.
By the way, no African American actress has ever won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama.
4. Can Better Call Saul pick up where Breaking Bad left off?
Better Call Saul, the prequel/spinoff series for AMC’s Breaking Bad, is up for Drama Series and Bob Odenkirk is up for Lead Actor. Even though the show isn’t anywhere near as serious as Breaking Bad, will Emmy voters want to continue honoring Vince Gilligan’s work?
5. It’s time to give Mad Men the night it deserves.
The last time Mad Men won an Emmy of any kind was in 2011, when it won Drama Series for a fourth season in a row. Then suddenly, the world started turning against the show. The second half of the show’s final season is up for eight Emmys and Jon Hamm might finally win Lead Actor. He continued to run into Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, but Cranston’s not around this time. Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks also have shots at becoming the first stars to win an Emmy for acting in Mad Men. (I can’t believe I just typed that...)
Mad Men finished its seven-season run on a brilliant note and it would be an incredible shame if the show is not allowed to take a final bow with an armful of Emmys.
