When Dunham asked the hopeful Democratic presidential nominee about marrying her husband, president Bill Clinton, 40 years ago, she was extremely honest in her answer.

Dunham asked if she had any “anxiety” about giving up her own identity to marry someone with clear “political ambitions,” and Clinton said she actually turned down his marriage proposal twice because of that.

“He asked, we were in England on a trip after law school graduation. He asked me to marry him,” she recalled. “I said, 'You know, I can’t say yes. No, I can’t do that right now.' And then, about a year later he asked me again, and I said 'No.' He said, 'Well, I’m not asking you again until you’re ready to say yes.'”

People reports Clinton explained her own "ideas were much more inchoate" than his, adding she “wasn’t sure how to best harness my energies” just yet. “And so I was searching.”

But “eventually I said yes,” she continued. “It was a big leap of faith, and I think most marriages are.”

The full interview will be released with Lenny’s first digital newsletter on Sept. 29.
