Marvel characters frequently appear outside of their individual movies, but Guardians of the Galaxy 2 director James Gunn has confirmed that at least two major Marvel stars will not appear in the upcoming sequel.
In a recent Q&A on his Twitter account, Gunn was asked if Hulk might show up in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and he gave a pretty unambiguous answer.
"I will comment on it now (as I've done before) - there is zero chance you will see Hulk in GotGVol2," Gunn wrote.
This shoots down the popular theory that Marvel might adapt Planet Hulk, a comic storyline where the Hulk is sent away into space. He disappeared at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Mark Ruffalo recently said that he won't be in Captain America: Civil War because Marvel doesn't want to give away just yet where the Hulk has gone to. If he has gone to space, we at least know for sure the Guardians won't come across him.
Gunn was also asked about Captain Marvel, and he confirmed that she will not be in the sequel either, saying that it's important that for now Quill is the only character from Earth. In general, he said, he doesn't want to take on too many new characters, and he instead wants all the characters from the original movie to get more screen time.
James Gunn has previously said that the Guardians movies are sort of in their own corner of the Marvel universe and they don't just exist to set up future movies, so it sounds like the sequel will once again not be bogged down by crossing over with other Marvel properties like Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange or The Avengers. In fact, whether they'll ever cross over at all is up in the air, as Jeremy Renner recently said he doesn't think a Guardians/Avengers crossover will ever happen.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
