According to Variety, while promoting his new film Black Mass, Depp was asked about Craven casting him in A Nightmare on Elm Street over 30 years ago.

“Wes Craven was the guy who gave me my start, from my perspective, for almost no reason in particular,” Depp said.

He explained that when he auditioned for A Nightmare on Elm Street, he read scenes with Craven's daughter, even though he had very little acting experience. It was Craven's daughter who picked out Depp and said he'd be perfect for the role. Depp said that Craven was brave enough to trust her opinion and to give Depp the gig despite his inexperience.

"But he was a good man, so rest in peace, old Wes," Depp concluded.

Wes Craven died on August 31 after a battle with brain cancer, as we previously reported. In addition to directing Depp in his first performance in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Craven was also responsible for iconic horror films like Scream and The Hills Have Eyes.

Johnny Depp's newest film, Black Mass, hits theaters on September 18.
