Jon Hamm finally wins an Emmy for ‘Mad Men,’ has nothing against those who beat him before

Eight years after his first nomination for playing Don Draper on AMC’s Mad Men, Jon Hamm finally walked away with an Emmy. It will go down as the show’s only Emmy acting win now that the show is over.

When the award was announced, Hamm took a bizarre climb up the stage, but then got very serious during his acceptance speech. Rather than do anything funny, he just thanked everyone involved in the show and his life. Us Weekly points out that he did thank his ex-girlfriend, actress Jennifer Westfeldt. The two were together 18 years before they announced their split earlier this month.

After the victory, Hamm told Entertainment Weekly that he can’t possibly hold a grudge against the actors who beat him during all those years or the Television Academy for not giving him the Emmy before. He lost before because he’d been up against Friday Night Lights’ Kyle Chandler or Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston or Homeland’s Damian Lewis.

“There’s no animosity or anything like that. I have nothing to compare it to, so my experience of ‘you’re in or you’re out,’ whether we win for the show or not,” Hamm told EW. “I’m just so glad to be here. Look at all the people I’m on a list with. Those are people I would watch even if I wasn’t an actor.”

Since Mad Men ended up losing Oustanding Drama Series to Game of Thrones, the show’s stars only had Hamm’s win to celebrate. Then again, the show did win the award for its first four seasons.
