Keith Richards takes hits at heavy metal, modern rock and hip-hop

Someone must have lit a fire under Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards because he just can’t stop criticizing everyone.

In a new interview with the New York Daily News, Richards decided to go all out on today’s popular music, slamming modern rock and roll, heavy metal and even hip-hop.

“It sounds like a dull thud to me,” the 71-year-old said about today’s rock. “For most bands, getting the syncopation is beyond them. It’s endless thudding away, with no bounce, no lift, no syncopation.”

When it comes to Metallica and even Black Sabbath, he said he “just thought they were great jokes.”

And, with a chuckle, Richards decided to diss hip-hop.

“Rap — so many words, so little said,” Richard told the Daily News. “What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there. ll they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.”

Richards also had some more criticisms for The Beatles, the Stones’ main rivals during the 1960s. He was never impressed with their live performances and said he “gave up” on the band in 1967.

Earlier this month, Richards also shared his thoughts on The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with Esquire.

“...The
Beatles sounded great when they were the Beatles. But there's not a lot of roots in that music,” Richards said. “I think they got carried away. Why not? If you're the Beatles in the '60s, you just get carried away—you forget what it is you wanted to do. You're starting to do Sgt. Pepper. Some people think it's a genius album, but I think it's a mishmash of rubbish, kind of like Satanic Majesties — ‘Oh, if you can make a load of s**t, so can we.’”

Richards is out in force to promote his upcoming solo record Crosseyed Heart, which comes out on Sept. 18.
