Lionel Richie is joining the ever-growing roster of music superstars to set up shop in Las Vegas. The singer will be performing at the AXIS at Planet Hollywood starting next spring.
Richie will start performing at Planet Hollywood in April through May, according to his site. He will also be returning to the venue in September and October, 2016.
Richie stopped by the Today Show to make the announcement, noting that performing in Vegas gives him the opportunity to do whatever he wants. “All the ideas I want to put on the stage, any hydraulics, anything you want to do, it's there,” he said.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Richie said he felt it was “just time” for him to take the Vegas stage.
“I want my crowd to feel like they’re in it as opposed to just coming to watch it. At Glastonbury, it was almost like The Rocky Horror Picture Show — people were coming dressed as Lionel Richie!” he said. “If I could show you pictures of my fans, here’s my Afro, my mustache, my green sweater. My show is karaoke night on steroids. So what this is going to be is an opportunity where the show is not only going on onstage but also in the audience.”
If you can’t get to Vegas next year, Richie still tours the country extensively. He’s even performing on a Carnival Cruise to the Bahamas next month.
Richie’s most recent album was his first trip to the country music world with 2012’s Tuskegee.
