Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige might have quit over ‘Captain America: Civil War’ budget

Earlier this week, news broke that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige no longer has to report to Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac ‘Ike’ Perlmutter. Now, we know just how close Feige came to leaving the most successful Hollywood studio of the decade because of Perlmutter.

Over the weekend, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Feige will now report directly to Disney Studios chief Alan Horn. He will no longer have to deal with Perlmutter, a frugal billionaire who had a reputation for trying to keep the film budgets low. Feige wasn’t too happy working under him and Disney wasn’t likely to let the architect of the Marvel movies leave.

While it was already known that Feige and Perlmutter didn’t always see eye-to-eye, a THR follow-up report claims that things really came to a head with Captain America: Civil War. The film is already much bigger than a typical solo character Marvel movie, since Robert Downy Jr. and nearly everyone else from the Avengers movies will be joining Chris Evans. In addition, Tom Holland will make his debut as Spider-Man.

That meant that the budget for Civil War would be likely on the level of an Avengers movie and the New York Marvel office wasn’t having any of that. “New York wanted to scale it down,” an insider told THR. In addition to Perlmutter, Feige also had to work with the Marvel “creative committee,” but he won’t have to deal with them either.

THR claims that Feige had even threatened to leave Marvel over the Civil War concerns. Disney was so worried about that happening that Disney CEO Bob Iger stepped in to allow Feige to sidestep Perlmutter.

Feige has overseen Marvel Studios movies since 2009 and the films have grossed a combined $7 billion.
