Mike Lupica, a longtime sports journalist, commentator and author, has been laidoff by the New York Daily News. The paper has been trying to cut costs and Lupica was among those who received pink slips.
Sources told Politico Media that it’s not clear how many employees were laidoff this time, but it wasn’t exclusive to just the newsroom. The site’s sources say that Lupica and sports editor Teri Thompson were among the layoffs.
Lupica was one of the highest-paid writers at the Daily News and could not come to terms on a new deal with the Daily News. The paper would not comment further on the layoffs.
TheWrap notes that Lupica also recently lost his ESPN Radio show in New York. Lupica has also written several books on sports and novels for young readers.
The Daily News, like any newspaper today, has been struggling to make up for dropping print circulation. Owner Mort Zuckerman recently tried to sell the paper, but failed to find an owner.
Lupica has not commented on the news.
