Officials at NASA are expected make a major announcement about Mars on Monday, Sept. 28.
NASA will hold a news briefing at 11:30 AM EDT Monday morning, according to its website. A major discovery about the red planet will be announced, and a brief question-and-answer session will take place during the event.
While it is unknown what this major announcement could be about, NASA has released a list of scientists that will participate in the event, including Jim Green, the director of planetary science at NASA and Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program.
Lujendra Ojha, a graduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is also among the speakers announced for the news conference. Ojha’s presence has led to speculation that the announcement will involve the discovery of water on Mars, as he was the first to discover evidence of flowing salt water on the red planet in 2011.
Water, as we know it, is the vital requirement to biological life, and the discovery of water on Mars has major implications in our search for extraterrestrial life.
The mystery Mars announcement will be broadcast live on NASA television and will be held at the James Webb Auditorium at NASA's Washington headquarters.
