Welcome back to another season of NCIS. If you remember, while following a lead on The Calling’s whereabouts, Agent Gibbs was shot at point blank range by a young kid named Luke Harris, who he had been trying to help. When the show premiered last night, we saw Gibbs being rushed into the surgical ward on the USS Daniel Webster. Dr. Cyril Taft (Jon Cryer) was the surgeon who made the attempt to save his life.
Back in the squad room, Ellie and Tim are on their phones when Vance walks in. Ellie tells him the Supreme Court Justices are safe and that three bouncing betty’s were found on the property where they had been staying. They walk over to Tim, who is on the phone with Tony. He tells Tony to “stay with him” and hangs up as Abby and Ducky come in. Tim is stunned as he tells them what happened to Gibbs. Vance asks about Daniel Budd, the leader of the calling, and Tim tells him that he escaped.
Cyril is preparing for surgery, talking about his past as a doctor when he saved the life of an NCIS agent. At the same time, Mike is talking to Gibbs and refers to Taft as “Chuckles the Clown.” Gibbs tells Mike to stop talking and Cyril, thinking he meant him, introduces himself and tells Gibbs that he is more concerned with his chest injury since the bullet left shards inside his chest. Gibbs asks about DiNozzo.
Outside the room, Tony is feeling guilty for not having Gibbs’ back. Joanne tells him not to blame himself. When his phone rings, Tony is not happy to see it is Vance and he answers. He tells Vance how Gibbs is doing and that he will stay with him. However, Vance wants him working on the case to find Budd and put a stop to The Calling.
Cyril is still getting ready for surgery and he talks to Gibbs, asking about if he has family. Gibbs responds that he has exes and Cyril bonds with him, asking if he likes Bourbon. They talk about getting a drink, but then Gibbs crashes so he gets to work.
Tim, Abby, Ellie, and Jimmy are waiting around their phones for a call about Gibbs. When Jimmy’s pager goes off to remind him to take enzymes, the girls tell him to turn off all notifications and alerts. Ducky is in the room as well, looking up information on Cyril. He learns Doctor Taft is a veteran and was a surgeon at Walter Reed. The team comments that Gibbs has his own Ducky and Ducky himself is sure Gibbs is in good hands.
Cyril is performing surgery on Gibbs, who has a lot of shrapnel inside his chest. He talks to the nurses, saying he likes to listen to music while performing surgery, asking an Ensign if she likes Motown. She mentions her parents did before the song “My Girl” begins playing.
In his mind, Gibbs sees his team working in the office, but none of them responds when he calls them by name. He stands up and sees the Most Wanted wall is covered in photos of his family and friends he has lost. The only person missing is Kelly, who appears to him in person. Gibbs gets a smile on his face as she takes his hand and leads him toward a light. On the table, Cyril realizes something is wrong and digs further inside Gibbs to find a piece of shrapnel that may be causing the issues Gibbs is having.
Gibbs and Kelly arrive on a beach, in a memory that Gibbs has about a day at the beach with Shannon and Kelly. They talk about how Gibbs has been doing and Kelly is worried for her father. She tells him not to live in the past and that there are people who need him. Meanwhile, Cyril finds a piece of shrapnel and Gibbs’ pressure begins rising again. Cyril tells a story about how he turned down the opportunity to be a physician to the President and while he was feeling strange about his decision, a child came into his care who was in an accident. He reveals the boy is a Law graduate and he is a reason Cyril sees to keep working. Cyril wonders if Gibbs will be a reason as well.
Gibbs tells Kelly he isn’t sure what he can do for people who need him. She tells him it’s time to fight back before fading away. In the surgical ward, Cyril finishes the surgery and tells Gibbs he owes him 15-year-old Single Malt.
Flash forward to the present and Ellie and Tim are in the bullpen watching a news report. As they talk, Gibbs comes in and they are surprised to see him since he was still on leave from work. Ellie hugs him and asks about fruit she brought for him. Gibbs asks where Tony is and Tim tells him that Tony and Joanne are on assignment. Gibbs was clearly left out of the loop and Tim reveals Vance told them not to tell him so he could recover.
When Gibbs sees Vance, he goes up to his office and is asked about fruit that Vance also brought for him. He fills Gibbs in on what is going on with Tony and Joanne, who are in Shanghai following up on a lead from the CIA on The Calling. Gibbs isn’t happy to be left out of the information loop. Vance tells him he wants him back on administrative duty, meaning he can’t work in the field. Abby rushes in to give Gibbs a hug and asks about fruit she also sent him. Gibbs tells her he is alright and that he has plenty of soup. She offers to make him lunch in her lab.
Meanwhile, Tony and Joanne are in Shanghai waiting on a contact of Joanne’s. Tony sees a street vendor and is able to speak to him in Mandarin, but has a hard time when the man also communicates back. Joanne takes the opportunity to help by also speaking in Mandarin. Tony decides to call Tim and finds out Gibbs is in the office. He is surprised to find this out and tells them they are meeting the contact. Rule 45 is brought up, which means to clean up your own mess.
Tim and Ellie tell Gibbs it has been hard for Tony to work with all that has been going on and Gibbs tells them he is taking a walk.
Back in Shanghai, CIA Kenny Yong shows up to pick Tony and Joanne up. He tells them they have information that The Calling may be working out of an old computer factory. Tony gets a call on his phone. It is Daniel Budd and he apparently knows they are in Shanghai. As he bates Tony about ending up like Gibbs, Joanne tries to trace the call, but she is unable to find him.
Gibbs goes to prison to talk to Matthew Rousseau. He still refuses to tell Gibbs anything regarding The Calling and where they are in Shanghai. Gibbs tells him that it is still his rules as he stabs Matthew in the hand. Still refusing to talk, Rousseau tells him “the game is changing.”
In MTAC, Vance, Tim, and Ellie are talking to the Secretary of Defense. They have information that North Korea had a submarine armed with a warhead and more information came that some computers were linked to NCIS. Tim investigates and discovers that the laptop it was linked to belonged to Ned Dorneget, who has been dead for four months.
Ellie tells the team that her husband said NSA did not intercept the North Korea signal and Tim comes in with Ned’s laptop. They wonder how his laptop was still active and it is mentioned that Cybercrimes keeps laptops active if they have information on cases. Tim needs help breaking into Ned’s laptop, so he and Ellie go to see Abby. Vance talks to Gibbs and tells him that Matthew Rousseau was found hanging in a prison cell and he also brings up knowing about the stab wound.
Tony, Joanne, and Kenny are waiting outside the factory, but Tony is impatient. They leave the car to investigate and when they go inside, they see kids on computers and one of the kids turns out to be Luke Harris. Joanne tries to approach him, but he runs and then a girl presses a button on the computer that begins a countdown. As the kids begin running, Tony realizes that the place is about to explode and they all escape as Joanne runs after Luke.
In MTAC, Vance discovers that the Secretary is prepared to order the military to strike against North Korea, but Vance feels they need to wait for his team to discover what is on the laptop before any action is taken. As this is happening, Tim, Abby, and Ellie are still working to decipher the laptop to see what happened.
Rousseau is brought to Ducky’s morgue, where he tells Gibbs that his death wasn’t a suicide and that he had injuries indicating blunt force trauma. He deduces that The Calling was cleaning up loose ends.
Tony and Joanne see Luke on the roof. He is distraught and thinks Gibbs is dead. They tell him Gibbs survived, but he doesn’t believe them so Tony offers to show him proof.
The Secretary of Defense tells Vance North Korea is denying anything about the warhead and the US is prepared to strike. Vance calls Abby’s lab to speak to Tim. Meanwhile, at his desk, Gibbs sees Luke on the video monitor when Tony calls. Luke is confused about how Gibbs survived. A stoic Gibbs doesn’t respond when Luke apologizes for shooting him. He tells Gibbs that there are more computer hubs and that Daniel Budd wanted to meet with the Chinese so they can discover what he can do.
Abby manages to break into Ned’s laptop and discovers that the hacker was trying to access the Pentagon mainframe. They realize Budd was trying to make it look like North Korea had hacked into the computer. Tim goes to give this information to the Secretary of Defense and as they are speaking, a second signal comes in making it look like the warhead is active. Ellie and Tim urge them not to act since Budd is playing a game with them and it is all “smoke and mirrors.” Tim works on the laptop and is able to stop the signal and deactivate the warhead.
Tony makes a call to Daniel Budd and speaks to him as he looks in his direction. He whistles to get Budd’s attention, but Daniel tries to run. As Kenny Yong tries to help, Daniel shoots him, momentarily distracting Tony. Eventually, Daniel is walking through an alley when Tony shows up with his gun drawn. Daniel bates Tony and even threatens him. He shoots him once and then when Daniel tries to pull his weapon again, Tony shoots him a second time, killing him.
Later home in the squad room, Tony is quiet, clearly still uneasy about everything that happened. Gibbs and Joanne come in talking about Luke, whose adoptive family still wants him home. Tim stands up and gives Joanne Ned’s laptop, telling her they got rid of all of his work data and that it has personal photos and writings that they know Ned would want her to have. Joanne is grateful for the friendship they had with her son and she hugs the team, including Gibbs, before leaving to go home. Gibbs goes to his desk and Tony asks if he wants to talk, but Gibbs is quiet.
In a diner, Gibbs meets with Cyril , who mentions that Gibbs hasn’t come in for his appointments to see how he has been doing since the shooting and he still owes him a Malt. Gibbs pulls out a bottle and mentions he is still in pain. He tells Cyril everyone at work is afraid he will end up breaking. Taft tells him about losing his son and wonders if Gibbs is grateful or mad that he saved his life. Gibbs mentions feeling lonely.
