Just a few weeks after the rumors started spreading, Netflix officially announced today that it has ordered 12 new episodes of the sci-fi anthology show Black Mirror.
News that creator Charlie Brooker’s House of Tomorrow production company signed a deal with Netflix surfaced earlier this month. The show had previously aired on Channel 4 in the U.K. and has featured stars like Toby Kebbell, Hayley Atwell, Domhnall Gleeson and even Jon Hamm. It was made available on Netflix earlier this year.
Today, Netflix said that House of Tomorrow will make 12 more episodes of the show, with Annabel Jones and Booker returning to executive produce. Production will start in late 2015 in the U.K.
“It's all very exciting -- a whole new bunch of Black Mirror episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable. Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that Black Mirror feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true,” Booker said in a statement.
"Charlie has created a one-of-a-kind series with an uncanny voice and prescient, darkly comedic vision. We're tremendously proud to bring Black Mirror to our members as a Netflix original series,” Cindy Holland, Vice President, original content, Netflix, added.
Each episode of Black Mirror tells a self-contained story and debuted in 2011. The show earned an international Emmy Award, a BAFTA nomination and a Peabody Award. The new episodes will debut on Netflix in the U.S. and outside the U.K. and Ireland. It’s not clear if Channel 4 will continue to be the U.K. home of the series.
