Snowden, Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden biopic, will be leaving the 2015 awards season race. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the NSA whistleblower and was expected to be in contention for Oscars.
Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the film still isn’t finished. However, Open Road Films, which is releasing the movie, declined to comment and hasn’t set a new release date.
The movie was supposed to be among the plethora of new movies begging for attention on Christmas Day. There are still five wide releases hitting theaters that day: Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip; Concussion with Will Smith; the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy Daddy’s Home; David O. Russell’s Joy with Jennifer Lawrence; and Warner Bros.’ Point Break remake.
And that’s still not all that Snowden would have to contend with. Christmas is just days after Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and Alejandro G. Inarritu's The Revenant open in limited release.
Gordon-Levitt still could be a player during the awards season though. He stars in Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk, in which he plays another real-life character, Philippe Petit.
Snowden will be the first feature film about the controversial figure, although he was the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary CitizenFour. Stone’s film also stars Melissa Leo, Shailene Woodley, Nicolas Cage and Zachary Quinto.
The pushing back of Snowden also means that there will be one less based-on-a-true-story movie for Academy voters to care about. Other true story movies expected to contend - aside from the ones opening on Christmas Day - include Spotlight, The Danish Girl and Steve Jobs.
