Oprah Winfrey snags recurring role on OWN’s megachurch series ‘Greenleaf’

Oprah Winfrey is going to star in a new drama series on her self-titled network. She has a recurring role in Greenleaf.

The Lionsgate TV drama is about the Greenleaf family, which leads the megachurch Greenleaf World Ministries. Keith David is starring as Bishop James Greenleaf, while Lynn Whitfield will play his wife, Lady Mae. Entertainment Weekly reports that Winfrey will play Lady Mae’s sister in a recurring part.

The rest of the cast includes Merle Dandridge, Desiree Ross, Lamman Rucker, Kim Hawthorne, Deborah Joy Winans, and Tye White. Deadline reports that Clement Virgo (The Book of Negroes) is directing the pilot.

Executive producers on the show are Winfrey, creator Craig Wright and Virgo. The series starts on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network next year.

Winfrey recently appeared in Lee Daniels’ The Butler and Selma. The last time she appeared in a TV series was 1990’s Brewster Palace.
