'Pacific Rim 2' production has been halted indefinitely

Bad news for Pacific Rim fans today: the sequel is now in serious trouble.

In a piece on The Hollywood Reporter about an ongoing conflict between Universal and Legendary, a brief mention is made of Pacific Rim 2. The article notes that Legendary has halted the sequel indefinitely so that it will be pushed back, and there's some chance it might not even be made at all.

This is a huge deal, as not only was Pacific Rim 2 officially announced by Legendary, but the studio had already set a release date: April 2017. Plus, Guillermo del Toro was evidently gearing up to shoot the movie this November. What seemed like a sure thing a few weeks ago now may become one of those sequels that could have been.

We don't know all of the details yet, but it looks like a big part of the decision came down to Pacific Rim not being a particularly great investment. After all, the original movie grossed only $101 million domestically on a $190 million budget. The film was able to perform much better overseas, especially in China, but it still wasn't exactly a home run.

Stay tuned for more Pacific Rim updates, but for now, Guillermo del Toro's new film Crimson Peak hits theaters on October 16.
