Phil Jackson to be more involved in Knicks coaching

NBA coaching legend and current New York Knicks president Phil Jackson has said that he plans to give more input to the team’s coaching staff.

In particular, Jackson said he plans to take a more hands-on approach with current Knicks coach Derek Fisher at Fisher’s request, according to ESPN. Fisher will be entering his second season as head coach.

“I thought that maybe I stepped back too far last year," Jackson said on Friday. "I wanted Derek to be his own person, to have his own feel for this, and that was multiplied in numbers of ways.”

“I think I'll probably be even more involved than I was last year as far as being here and being watchful and suggestive, watching film together with Derek at times,” Jackson added.

The Knicks had won a franchise-worst 17 games last season, following Fisher and Jackson’s first year with the team as head coach and team president, respectively.

Fisher said that he would welcome the input of Jackson, a Hall of Fame coach that won an NBA-record of 11 championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.

“I'm the head coach of the team, I lead the team, I'll do what I need to do to get the job done,” Fisher said. “But for sure, [I'm] looking forward to spending more time away from the team, talking basketball [with Jackson], talking shop, learning from one of the great basketball minds we've ever seen.”

However, it is currently unknown how involved Jackson plans to be, if he will attend practices or visit coaches meetings, via CBS Sports.
