Ronda Rousey only continues to prove herself as an exceptional fighter. Her acting chops, though, still use some more thorough training. Being the competitive personality she is, however, she's not backing down from the challenge, and as Rousey works up her resume, she's jumpkicks her career ever higher with MGM's Road House remake.
Rousey comes onto the picture early on, Variety reports, as screenwriters haven't yet been hired. She enters the lead role Patrick Swayze played in the original 1989 film, a ruff-and-tuff bouncer for The Double Deuce, one of Missouri's most rollicking bars, who must save the town from a corrupt businessman.
Production hopes to begin sometime next year. Despite talk of a remake circulating for the past few years, with Rob Cohen attached to direct one back in 2013, Rousey's interest is what made the studio materialize the project into early development. The fighter embraced the idea of the long talked-about re-imagining, but wants this new pic to respect the original. She's already reached out to Lisa Niemi, Swayze's widow, to make sure she got her blessing before embarking on this retelling, which Niemi gave gladly.
In addition to Rousey's involvement, MGM wants this revision to capitalize on the original's cult classic status, something potentially elevated through Family Guy, and also continue dusting off other classic properties of theirs they can re-prioritize, notably after this fall's Rocky spin-off, Creed, looks to be a major success for the studio. Rousey certainly has the physicality for the role, but it'll remain to be seen if she can carry a film of her own as an actress.
This is just one property she's got lined up for the moment. Already filling in supporting roles in The Expendables 3 last year and Furious 7 and Entourage earlier this year, she recently signed on to frontline a biopic of herself, My Fight/Your Fight, from her autobiography of the same name. She's also attached to The Athena Project, based on Brad Thor's book, and Peter Berg's Mile 22, the latter to begin filming in February, and recently campaigned hard to get the titular superhero role in Captain Marvel. She's doing what she can to get in the acting rig. As a fighter, she's got a match with Holly Holm coming November 14. In the meantime, Rousey should get her leginments ready for all the roundhouse kicks in her future.
