According to Deadline, director Rupert Wyatt had dropped out of Gambit. Rumors are circling that there were some issues with the script and the budget, but officially, the director is saying it was all a matter of timing. The film was originally going to begin production this November, but when Fox pushed it to March, that conflicted with another project.

“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project," Wyatt said in a statement. "I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.”

It's not clear what project he could be talking about, as the director does not have any announced films on the horizon.

Gambit is no stranger to behind the scenes drama, as over the summer, Channing Tatum was rumored to be dropping out of the movie, although Fox was able to sign him on officially later on. Fox is reportedly committed to finding a new director for the superhero film, which will move ahead as scheduled.

The studio has a lot riding on this, as X-Men and Fantastic Four are really the only two comic book properties Fox has exclusive rights to, and the latter movie was a total disaster. Fox hopes to build up their own cinematic universe with these upcoming movies, as Gambit, Deadpool and X-Men will all take place in the same world and will cross over with one another.

Gambit is scheduled to hit theaters on October 7, 2016.
