Selfies with bears causes Colorado park to close

One Colorado park has been forced to close not because of incidents with wild animals, but rather over human behavior around those animals.

CNET noted that recently people have been foregoing common sense and trying to take selfies with the bears at Waterton Canyon just outside of Denver.

"We've actually seen people using selfie sticks to try and get as close to the bears as possible, sometimes within 10 feet of wild bears," Brandon Ransom, manager of recreation for Denver Water, said in a recent blog post. "The current situation is not conducive for the safety of our visitors or the well-being of the wildlife."

This time of year the bears in the park are preparing for hibernation but humans are getting too close to them and that is presenting a real danger. Therefore, park officials had no choice but to close the canyon to the public until the bears are not as active.

People trying to take selfies with wild animals has already proven to be hazardous this year when visitors at Yellowstone got too close to Bison. The animals ended up attacking several tourists on separate occasions.

It’s important to remember that all wild animals are unpredictable and you can be seriously injured trying to get that perfect shot to post on social media.
