Subway CEO and co-founder Fred DeLuca passed away at 67

The CEO and co-founder of the Subway sandwich chain, Fred DeLuca, passed away on Monday at the age of 67.

According to CNBC, Subway confirmed the news a day after his death. DeLuca and a business partner opened the restaurant when he was just 17-years-old and it is now one of the biggest restaurant chains in the U.S.

DeLuca was battling Leukemia, which he was diagnosed with in 2013, and his sister, Suzanne Greco is currently the president of day-to-day operations for Subway.

The New York Times reported DeLuca had continued his work as CEO while undergoing treatments for cancer. He was a hands-on CEO, making decisions for the company and traveling to different Subway outlets in order to try the food and check on the service.

Today, there are over 44,000 Subway franchises in 110 countries. Their financial numbers are not reported publically, but they reportedly had a revenue of 18 billion in 2012.

Subway has been in the news lately after their former spokesman, Jared Fogle, was investigated in a child pornography case. Subway immediately cut ties with Fogle.

He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth, son, John, and his sister.
