Subway investigation finds a ‘serious’ complaint against Jared Fogle in 2011

Subway said on Friday that it has completed an investigation into possible complaints about former spokesman Jared Fogle. The company confirmed that it did receive at least one “serious” complaint in 2011 and failed to properly act upon it.

Fogle reached a plea deal with prosecutors in August on charges that he paid for sex with girls in their teens and possession of child pornography. In exchange to pleading guilty to the charges, Fogle will be sentenced to between five and 12 years in prison.

Subway immediately cut ties with Fogle when the news broke, but there were claims that the company had been alerted to his illegal activities in the past. Former Florida journalist Rochelle Herman-Walrond had told the media that she complained to Subway after meeting Fogle several years ago. Last month, Subway claimed that it didn’t receive any complaints about Fogle.

But on Friday, Subway told the Associated Press that it did indeed receive a “serious” complaint from Herman-Walrond in 2011. However, Subway spokeswoman Kristen McMahon said that the complaint had “nothing that implied anything about sexual behavior or criminal activity involving Mr. Fogle.”

McMahon did not reveal exactly what Herman-Walrond’s message was, but did admit that it was “not properly escalated or acted upon.”

Subway said that it did not find any other complaints about Fogle.

Herman-Walrond and Fogle’s lawyers did not comment on the investigation’s findings.
