Fox may have had a weak premiere for the new show Rosewood, but that had no impact on the return of Empire whatsoever. Lee Daniels and Danny Strong’s hip hop drama came back with a bang, leaving everyone else in the dust.
That made it the third-most watched show in the time slot, behind CBS’ Survivor (9.61 million; 2.4 18-49 rating) and ABC’s The Middle (8.16 million; 2.1). NBC came in fourth with The Mysteries of Laura (6.9 million; 1.2). ABC’s The Goldbergs scored 7.6 million viewers and a 2.4 rating.
Empire dominated the 9 p.m. hour with a whopping 16.02 million viewers and a 6.5 18-49 rating. The show has continued to grow ever since it debuted earlier this year, during the second half of last season. As EW points out, the Season 1 finale drew 17.6 million viewers and a 6.9 rating.
ABC’s Modern Family kicked off its season with 9.26 million viewers and a 3.1 rating and Black-ish followed with 7.3 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating. Nashville finished up the night for ABC with just 5 million viewers and a 1.3 18-49 rating. It’ll be interesting to see how far that show goes in its fourth season if it continues to get low numbers like that.
NBC’s two-hour Law & Order: SVU premiere drew 8.2 million viewers and a 1.7 18-49 rating.
CBS’ Big Brother finale drew 6.49 million viewers and a 2.2 18-49 rating.
