NBC is hoping to revive the variety show genre with the help of Neil Patrick Harris’ Best Time Ever, which finally launched last night after the performance finale of America’s Got Talent. It got off to a decent start in the ratings, although it wasn’t as game-changing as the peacock might have hoped.
Best Time Ever drew 6.8 million viewers and a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic for its first episode, which aired at 10 p.m.
NBC said that this was the best unscripted debut for the network since 2012, when Take It All debuted to 7.1 million viewers and a 2.2 rating. Of course, NBC failed to mention that Take It All didn’t continue past its initial December 2012 run.
Best Time also scored the best non-Voice audience in the slot since April 28.
NBC had heavily promoted Best Time and hoped that AGT would provide a great launch-pad for the show. However, nearly 5 million viewers left NBC after AGT finished. AGT scored 11.33 million viewers and a 2.3 rating for its two hours.
If there’s a silver lining to Best Time’s less than stellar debut, it’s that it managed to beat a repeat of CBS’ NCIS: New Orleans. That show still grabbed 4.78 million viewers. NPH’s show will face a bigger challenge once CBS starts its new season.
