Brian Williams made his return to the small screen on Tuesday afternoon over six months after being suspended and ultimately losing his job at NBC Nightly News. He returned for MSNBC’s special coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S., but it wasn’t without some snickering.
Williams started his coverage of the Pope landing in D.C. before he even got there, but Twitter was too busy mocking Williams to notice, instead starting the hashtag #BrianWilliamsPopeStories to poke fun at him for embellishing stories from his experiences in the field.
Twitter users used the hashtag to make up stories about what they think Williams would say about the Pope.
Some of those “stories” included, “#BrianWilliamsPopeStories Did you know he was grazed by the very same bullet that struck Pope John Paul II in 1981 in Vatican Square?” and “Wanted a drink, so I changed some water into a nice Merlot. Francis seemed impressed. #BrianWilliamsPopeStories.”
