'UnREAL's Shiri Appleby to guest star on 'Code Black'

Bradley Cooper isn't the only high-profile actor guest-starring on one of CBS' latest programs, apparently. Shiri Appleby slipped some room between seasons of UnREAL to guest star on Code Black, the latest medical drama to come to broadcast.

Currently, the actress is only signed on for one episode on the show, but Variety reports she's expected to have a multi-episode arc throughout the series. She could potential appear in as many as eight episodes.

Appleby is signed on to play Dr. Carla Niven, the ex-girlfriend to Dr. Malaya Pineda (Melanie Chandra), a first-year resident at the hospital where the show takes place. She "unexpectedly" re-enters Pineda's life, but as a patient this time, coming for treatment for muscle pain (the actress is currently expecting her second child), only to find out her diagnosis is something serious.

“Over the course of Malaya treating her and supporting her, this love story develops, but ultimately, it’s a bit of a tragic love story," admits Michael Seitzman, Code Black's showrunner.

The connection between Appleby and Code Black likely comes from UnREAL creator Marti Nixon, the creator behind the Lifetime show and an executive producer here. With UnREAL picked up for a second season in July, expect this to be little more than a time filler for the lead actress. She's also no stranger to guest-starring on CBS, having filmed a brief role in Elementary last year.

Appleby's not the only UnREAL cast member spending her off-hours on different shows, however. Constance Zimmer appears on the latest season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this fall, and a quick look at her costume was just released today in anticipation.

Code Black premieres September 30 at 10/9c, right after Criminal Minds. When Appleby comes onto the show isn't certain. Expect her a few months down the season.
