70mm version of 'The Hateful Eight' is six minutes longer, Quentin Tarantino confirms

Quentin Tarantino is really hyping the 70mm version of his newest movie, The Hateful Eight, and now he's giving you yet another reason to see it over the digital version.

The director told Variety that the 70mm print of The Hateful Eight is actually six minutes longer than the digital version. That will bring it to a total run time of 3 hours and 2 minutes, and it will include a 12-minute intermission in the middle of the film.

So what will that extra six minutes consist of? According to Tarantino, he cut the film a bit differently so it would be appropriate for an audience watching it in 70mm. That will include longer cuts of scenes you can really enjoy the massive scale, but that won't be the case for the cut that's being sent to most multiplexes.

“It was awesome in the bigness of 70, but sitting on your couch, maybe it’s not so awesome," he said. "So I cut it up a little bit. It’s a little less precious about itself.”

Not every theater is capable for screening 70mm film prints, which are significantly larger than the typical film print of 35mm. The Hateful Eight will release on Dec. 25 on only about 100 screens that are capable of playing 70mm, and it will then expand with a digital version on Jan. 8.

This is the widest 70mm release in over 20 years. Other filmmakers who have embraced this format in recent years include Paul Thomas Anderson with The Master and Christopher Nolan with Interstellar.
