Last night’s Jane The Virgin returned with a quick recap of everything that happened last season. Since that would take up entirely too much time to summarize in this recap, we’ll just move forward and remind you that Jane’s baby was kidnapped in the final moments of the first season finale.
When the episode began, we saw young Jane upset because of her telenovela and how it kept getting stressful to watch. But the music from the theme song always made her feel like everything would turn out just fine. Then we flash forward to minutes after Mateo is kidnapped. Rafael and Jane are gazing at photos of their little boy and discussing his hair while Xiomoara and Rogelio quietly discuss their drunken wedding. The peace is disturbed when an actual nurse comes in to give Mateo his hearing test and Jane is stunned to find out that the woman from before is not a nurse at the hospital.
As Rafael angrily begins asking where his son is, we see Michael at a bar drinking while another patron talks to him. While he is there, he gets a phone call from Sin Rostro herself, informing Michael about her taking Mateo. While this is happening, Jane is watching in horrified silence, waiting for something to tell her things would be okay. She gets a phone call from Michael, informing her he knows who has Mateo and he knows how to get the baby back.
Michael goes to the hospital room and tells them Sin Rostro wants a dragonfly brooch that Luisa had taken from her (the night they had sex in the mental institution) and she will return the baby if they find the brooch. It had been evidence but Luisa has it, so Michael will return it. Rafael demands to go too and Jane, despite recovering from giving birth, is desperate to also find her child.
They go to talk to Luisa, but find out that her girlfriend, Juicy, had gotten upset when she saw Luisa still had Rose’s things, including the brooch, and had thrown everything into the hotel pool. A stunned Michael and Rafael race down to dive in and find it. However, Jane herself finds it quickly by checking the basket filter and finding the brooch in the evidence bag.
While they are rushing to find Mateo, Rogelio, Alba and Xo wait for word. Rogelio is on his phone with celebrities tweeting him to offer help since he had retweeted the Amber Alert for the baby.
They go to a church where Michael goes inside to find Nadine with little Mateo. She tries to goad him into wanting to keep the evidence, since the brooch has the faces of all the people that Sin Rostro changed. But Michael is only interested in getting the baby back. He carries Mateo outside, where a joyful Rafael and Jane run to reunite with their baby.
After baby Mateo is rescued, he is taken to the doctor for a check up. He is just fine, but did lose some weight, which is normal. This doesn’t sit too well for Jane and she also notices that he has trouble staying awake for feedings. The doctor and Xo give her advice, while a confused Rafael doesn’t know how to help since he hadn’t been to a lactation class.
Michael talks to his boss, who informs him that Nadine’s tracking on her cell phone has been turned off and he is wondering if someone tipped her off. However, Michael denies any knowledge of this, even though we see in a flashback he knows about the tracking device. Michael assures him that Sin Rostro is the most important priority on his list, even though it really is Jane.
Scott, Rafael’s dad’s assistant, is surprise to see Rafael back at work, but he has to make sure Petra is ready for the meeting with the bank on the loan and Luisa. He goes to her room only to find she is asleep and possibly drunk. Rafael doesn’t notice that she has a container of his sperm sample on the table. She surreptitiously picks it up and hides it behind a blue gift bag. After he leaves, she places the container in the bag. What Rafael doesn’t know is Petra made a pro/con list of getting herself pregnant with the sample, with him being the only pro.
Jane is with the baby and holding him while having trouble sleeping. Xiomara offers to hold him, but then Alba comes in and reminds her she is tired too. So she takes her great-grandson while Jane and Xiomara try to sleep. However, they are awakened to noise outside the house. Going outside, they are stunned to discover the media is there, along with people dressed as nuns and holding signs about Mateo being the second coming.
Rogelio looks outside and wonders how people knew about what was going on. The girls watch the news and are stunned to discover that the media got wind of it after Rogelio’s tweet about the Amber Alert and his grandson. A search of Jane’s name found the website her stepsisters had made about her virgin pregnancy. Jane is horrified to see people she knows being interviewed, including her boss at the Catholic school and a woman who was on the bus the night she went into labor.
Rafael shows up to go to the lactation class with Jane, but they don’t know how to leave carefully. Michael ends up escorting them so Jane can go to the class. She gets some tips from a mom and the teacher, including to sit in the sunlight so the baby will be more awake.
Meanwhile outside, Rafael asks for Michael’s advice on inserting himself into the Villanueva household when it comes to his son. Michael has three options, to either give good advice, bad advice, or no advice. Of course, we don’t find out what he chose until later.
Petra is talking to Luisa about their meeting, which went bad when Luisa began thinking of her girlfriend after someone ordered juice. Petra escorts Luisa out and asks Scott about the bag she had in her room. She is stunned when Scott tells her he took the bag to Rafael’s penthouse with other baby gifts. Petra decides to go to the penthouse and heads for the nursery.
At Alba’s house, Mateo is crying despite having just been fed. Michael tells everyone he warned people outside that they would be arrested if they trespassed. Jane is annoyed when the sound of singing is heard from outside. There are Monks who apparently came by.
Petra makes it to the nursery and ends up remembering the time when she and Rafael were expecting the baby they miscarried. The memory is of when they found out the baby’s gender. After getting lost in the memory, Petra finds the sperm sample, out of the bag, and walks out, only to run into Rafael. In order to make up a reason for why she is there, she informs him about Luisa’s behavior at the meeting. An upset Rafael calls Luisa to tell her he is disappointed and upset that she would ruin their plan to get Petra from the hotel.
Michael goes to talk to Rogelio, who is upset about what happened and his role. He wants to make things right with Jane. Michael gives him advice, telling him that from his perspective as a cop, Rogelio did the right thing, and tells him to think smaller in helping Jane, such as what he’d do as a grandpa, or papa as Rogelio wants to be called.
Jane is sitting with the baby and feeding him. She is having trouble sleeping and Xiomara offers to take the baby. Jane blames herself for Mateo being kidnapped since her maternal instincts didn’t allow her to realize something was off. Xiomara assures her that it wasn’t her fault. Jane wants to be able to do something good for her baby and not to give him a bottle.
Xiomara offers to help her daughter as much as she can, so with Alba’s help, they work on making sure Mateo latches on to her breast when eating. However, after he has eaten every thirty minutes and they don’t know why he is still eating. This is when Rafael comes in and, armed with advice he received from Michael, he suggests that Mateo is cluster feeding, which happens when the mom’s milk supply begins to come in. Jane is overjoyed that her milk is coming in.
The baby has to be changed so Rogelio offers. But since he doesn’t know how, Xo offers to help. Rafael talks to Jane about wanting to be part of the family in terms of being there for his son, much to Michael’s chagrin since his advice is bringing them together. Jane agrees and suggests he can stay the night to be with Mateo. Michael is about to leave, but then he sees a tweet with Mateo’s photo. Jane is stunned to realize it is from the breastfeeding class when she moved over to the window.
She goes outside to deal with the people outside and then is inspired by the light from someone’s compact. It is someone named Slutty Crystal, who said on television she thought Mateo glowed when she saw a glimpse of him. Inspired, Jane goes over to tell Sister Margaret that she has been having sex and then the moment ends when Jane sees she is leaking milk. Jane is thrilled and points to her breasts, calling it a “miracle” before high fiving Rafael and rushing back inside.
Petra gets in touch with her mother, who she has been trying to call the entire episode. Her mother is not amused with her issues, since she herself is in prison, and she tells her daughter to let things go and move on.
Luisa talks to Petra, who tells her she knows about Rafael and her manipulation. However, Luisa quickly manipulates Petra right back and tells her all the right things, including the fact that Mateo should have been her baby and she will have Rafael back. She is unaware that Petra has the sperm sample and this conversation leads Petra to making the final decision to inseminate herself with Rafael’s sperm.
At his next check up, the doctor tells the happy parents that Mateo has gained weight and Jane is happy as she hugs the doctor. Out in the waiting room, Xiomara and Alba are both happy and now knowing the stress is behind them, Xo informs her mother she has news for both her and Jane.
Jane and Alba are stunned to see the wedding video, officiated by a Cher impersonator, and they both launch into hysterical laughter at the situation. Meanwhile, Petra goes back to her office, where she is wearing sunglasses to avoid the light. Scott tells her he knows about the sperm.
Michael and Jane are texting and he tells her he is at home, but she knows he is outside. She goes to see him and tells him thank you for all he did. They share a sweet moment and Jane ends up telling him that Rafael is over, but only for Mateo. She is confused about why she told him that, but leaves the conversation with a smile. When she goes back to her room, Rafael has his shirt off so he can do skin to skin contact and bond with Mateo. As Jane tries to rest, Rafael rocks their son.
Just when we think the episode is over, we see an unknown woman looking at an iPad, which has the story about Jane with a photo of Rafael, Jane and Michael. The woman tells a man she is with that she wants “her” found. Uh oh.
