Actor Jeremy Renner came took to social media to clarify statements he made earlier this week regarding the gender pay gap in Hollywood.
Renner took to the site WhoSay Oct. 23 to set the record straight by stating "On the issue of gender equality I have always supported women deserving equal pay. Period. A person should be rewarded only by their merit or service to their given field. Gender, race, creed, or sexual orientation should have absolutely no influence in pay, positively or negatively."
American Hustle co-star Jennifer Lawrence has created a new movement in Hollywood with her recently penned letter on the gender pay gap that came in response to the revelation that Renner and co-stars Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale made more money for the film than Lawrence and co-star Amy Adams both of whom were nominated for Academy Awards for their performances.
Following the letter, Cooper responded by pledging to negotiate contracts alongside his female counterparts prior to filming. When Renner was approached asking if he'd be willing to do the same he responded "that's not my job."
He came under fire for his response and has been deemed by some to be sexist. However, Renner has since claimed that some of his comments were taken out of context and that he did express at the time that he does indeed support pay equality.
Renner concluded his letter by stating "I have always asked for all of us to move towards a unity and equality not just in pay, but social acceptance and discover compassion and tolerance within ourselves, to bridge our differences; united we stand."
