Last month, it was announced that Disney would be making a new Mary Poppins movie, and fans were understandably skeptical. But the director says the film will not actually be a remake of the 1964 classic.
In an interview with Vulture, director Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) said the upcoming movie will be more of an extension of Mary Poppins, using author P.L. Travers' other books as the source material.
"P.L. Travers wrote eight books all together," Marshall explained. "They worked from the first book, and we are working from the other books, not touching the iconic brilliance of Mary Poppins. This is an extension."
Marshall went on to call the original book series the Harry Potter of its time, but noting that nothing else was ever done with the additional material. Rather than simply remaking the 1964 movie, he decided he would work with the other books and tell a story never put to screen.
He also noted that Julie Andrews is a good friend of his, and she's happy that the new movie is being made. Marshall said that if there's any way they could involve Andrews in some capacity, he'd love to do it.
Aside from Mary Poppins, Travers published seven other books in the series, including Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens The Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park. They were released from 1934 to 1988.
The new movie is expected to take place two decades after the events of the original. It will be a musical as well, with songs from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Smash, Hairspray).
