'Star Trek Beyond' is filming in Dubai

Star Trek Beyond is the latest film to shoot its scenes in the United Arab Emirates.

Star Trek Beyond, the third movie in the reboot of the popular science-fiction franchise, is the latest blockbuster film to partially shoot in Dubai, as authorities shut down the busy Sheikh Zayed Road on Friday as a helicopter filmed alongside the multi-lane highway “cutting through the heart of Dubai,” reported The Associated Press.

The film’s executive producers had been searching for a futuristic location to shoot, and in Dubai, they found one.

"We came searching for the future and found it," Jeffrey Chernov, one of the film’s executive producer said at a Wednesday conference that marked the start of filming.

Dubai is no stranger to international blockbusters, as parts of the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII was filmed in Abu Dhabi. The city also served as the backdrop for Furious 7, the most recent Fast & Furious sequel.

Actor Chris Pine, who plays Capt. James T. Kirk, described the view out of his hotel room window as looking out on "such a stunning city."

"It looks like whatever tomorrow will be," Pine said. "It's future land. It's incredible."

Idris Elba, set to play the villain and newcomer to the Star Trek series, said that bringing the film to Dubai could serve as “a gateway to new cultures,” the Hollywood Reporter reported.

Star Trek Beyond, also starring the likes of Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg, is directed by Justin Lin and set to open July 22.
